Shein accused of promoting slave-like labor

The recent scandal involving Shein, one of the largest fast fashion retailers in the world, has brought a serious issue to light: the exploitation of workers in conditions analogous to slavery. Reports reveal that, in factories in China, workers work up to 75 hours a week, far beyond what is permitted by local labor laws. The factories that supply Shein offer wages that barely cover the cost of living, while many employees are forced to work in unhealthy environments and without adequate rest conditions.

This reality, unfortunately, is not isolated to the fashion industry. The sector, especially fast fashion, has a history of human rights abuses, from child labor to exhausting work hours and degrading working conditions. And it is in this scenario that Fashion Law becomes an essential tool for promoting change.

Fashion Law seeks to ensure that labor and human rights laws are complied with at all stages of the production chain. This includes implementing clear and fair contracts, complying with workplace safety and hygiene standards, and ensuring that workers have decent working hours and fair pay. It also works to hold brands accountable for illegal practices in their supply chain, such as the use of forced or slave labor.

In the case of Shein, the company has found itself at the center of global investigations for repeated violations of labor rights. Reports indicate that many of its suppliers do not follow the company's code of conduct, allowing the exploitation and abuse of workers. This not only damages the brand's image, but also creates significant legal risks, which can result in fines, lawsuits, and even a ban on marketing its products in certain countries.

Ensuring compliance with labor and human rights laws is essential for the sustainability of the business and for preserving the reputation of brands. A business model that exploits workers can result in consumer boycotts and severe sanctions at national and international levels. In today's increasingly informed and attentive world regarding business practices, transparency and ethics are non-negotiable requirements.

At Carolina Lago Advocacia, we are prepared to guide and represent brands, companies and fashion professionals, helping to ensure compliance with labor laws and promote fairer and more humane practices.
